‘How to make COVID19 vaccine at home?’ topped the Google searches in India during January 2021. Although the country has officially approved two vaccines for mass usage, its distribution continues to be a gradual and systematic process that prioritizes front line workers followed by the common public. However, it is important to address the reality of DIY hacks and random medicine lists circulating across WhatsApp and similar platforms.
Busting the myth
The truth is that COVID-19 vaccine cannot be made at home. Vaccine for any disease needs to go through three stages of trial with hundreds of tests carried out by scientists and experts before authorized public use. Therefore, any combination of medicines, supplements, or home remedies is not enough to replicate the effects of the vaccine. On the contrary, medicines consumed without proper knowledge might put an individual’s life at risk.
Immunity through vaccination
Once Oxford’s CoviShield or Bharat Biotech’s COVAXIN is made accessible for the public, individuals can register for the vaccine via CoWin app. The mandatory registration process requires valid ID proof such as Aadhar card, PAN card, Voter ID, passport, or similar documents.

After registration, the eligible beneficiaries would receive the time, place, and date for vaccine administration. As per medical guidelines, two doses of vaccine will be given to the individual in a span of 28 days.
According to government guidelines, elderly people or existing patients of diabetes, cancer, or hypertension must be extra cautious about the vaccine dosage due to excessive vulnerability. However, for other people who have not showcased any symptoms, the vaccine is voluntary.
