Rapid urbanisation and modernisation have resulted in increasing amount of solid waste like tyres, especially in the metropolitans. While we have heard a lot about the importance of recycling tyres, majority of us don’t know the uses they can be put to.
Listed below are some of the best by-products of recycled tyres suggested by Pawan Kumar Ruia CEO of the leading tyre player Ruia Group:
- Tyre-Derived Fuel (TDF)
Tyres can be used as a fuel in its shredded form. TDF is the fuel composed of shredded scrap tyres, commonly used in traditional fires. It is mainly used in combustion devices for burning at high temperatures.
- Tyre-Derived Aggregate (TDA)
The shredded scrap tyres can be used in a number of engineering projects, constructions, road repair, etc.
- Rubber Mulch
Commonly used for covering playgrounds, Rubber Mulch consists of waste tire buffings or nuggets of synthetic rubber from tyres. The material is relatively shock absorbing, which makes it safer for children to play on, say experts at Ruia Group.
- Crumb Rubber
Made by reducing scrap tires into even granules, Crumb Rubber comes in a number of types. During its recycling process, steel and tire cord (fluff) are removed, leaving tyre rubber with a granular consistency. This material can be used for making a number of products like rubber mats, plastics, asphalt, sealing materials, speed bumps, etc.
- Rubber Powder
Rubber Powder is a reasonable material which can be used as an alternative for oil and rubber based products. Along with a high-performance, its use does not have any side-effects on humans. This is one of the major reasons for its increasing usage.
It is a lesser known fact that tyres consist of around 20% steel. The process of recycling makes it free from the toxins, making it fit for reuse.
With the availability of these by-products options, you know what to do with your tyres when they reach the end of their lives.
