Ekta Kapoor, a name that features amongst the topmost small screen producers in India, recently became a mother via surrogacy. She followed the footsteps of her brother Tusshar Kapoor, who also became a father using the same method, whose son was born at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital.
Founded by the philanthropist Seth Lokoomal Chanrai, Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai has always been a name worthy of a mention when it comes to IVF (In vitro fertilization) and surrogacy.
Jaslok Hospital – the expertise in IVF
The problem of a blocked tube in females or male infertility, apart from natural causes, can be connected to the hectic schedules and busy lifestyles. In today’s day and age, it is taking a toll on the mental and physical well-being of an individual. In this scenario, Jaslok Hospital has been playing a crucial role, both nationally and internationally.
Catering to the needs of couples who cannot conceive naturally, the Department of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, Jaslok Hospital was founded in October 1990. With a clientele of more than 6,000 couples from almost every state in India and over 50 countries, the hospital has helped deliver more than 10,000 babies.
What is In vitro fertilization(IVF)?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the process in which the egg and sperm are fused and fertilized outside the female body. A woman’s ovulatory process is carefully monitored and stimulated, and then the ovum or ova are removed and fertilized with the sperm in a laboratory. The zygote or the fertilized egg is then cultured for 2-6 days and implanted in the body of the same or other woman, which then leads to pregnancy. The process is referred to as surrogacy when the zygote is injected into another woman’s body.
IVF is a complex procedure that requires specialized doctors and machinery. Micromanipulation (ICSI), Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH), Semen and Embryo Cryopreservation and a fully functional Andrology Laboratory for diagnostic and therapeutic tests are amongst the state-of-the-art facilities that the hospital has been putting to use for In Vitro Fertilization. The genetic tests conducted in the hospital employ automated Karyotyping Workstation for chromosome analysis and Fluoresecnce in situ hybridization (FISH) and advanced equipment for molecular genetic tests like the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The laboratories are well-equipped for Prenatal, Postnatal and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnostic tests (PGD).
Asia’s first Cryogatt System for IVF
Taking their services up a notch, Jaslok Hospital also installed Asia’s first Cryogatt System for IVF. The globally-unique patented RFID systems developed by Cyrogatt work at levels that are safe for the samples. The storage and tracking of embryos is being directly impacted with the system, making the process better.
The process of identification and auditing has also been improved with the Radio Frequency Safety Net that helps detect the embryos, sperm and eggs. “We are thrilled to have always been amongst the first centres in the world to harness new technology to provide the highest quality care for our patients. For the people who have a blocked tube, IVF provides the best opportunity of having a child using their own eggs. Couples with male infertility problem might have a much higher chance of conceiving with IVF than conceiving naturally. People who suffer from PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), where there is a hormone imbalance leading to irregular menstrual cycles. IVF has been proven very successful in patients with PCOS, who will not conceive with ovulation induction. Many other problems like these can be taken care of with the help of IVF and it can help people have a family of their own,” said Dr Firuza Parikh, IVF Specialist at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre.
IVF has been a ray of hope for many and has helped parents live their dream of having children while making sure they do not give up on their goals. Technological advancements and innovation, along with its implementation in facilities like Jaslok Hospital has made the process better and more effective, resulting in more successful deliveries across the globe.
