Dashera and Diwali are two main Hindu festivals celebrated in India. Dussehra is celebrated as the symbol of victory of good over evil and Diwali is the festival of lights, which also signifies the triumph of light over darkness. Both the festivals give us a common message of righteousness overpowering the falsehood.
But do we really observe the spirit of these festivals? Do the celebrations go overboard sometimes? The answer is ‘Yes’.
Quite often, in our madness of celebrating a religious festival, we don’t realize that we are harming Mother Nature.
Here are 7 ways of celebrating pollution free Diwali festivals :
- Avoid noise polluting elements:Diwali is always described as the festival of lights, so there is no need of lighting up crackers and listening to music on loud speakers. Last year, Delhi witnessed the worst level of noise pollution, which was declared very harmful by the authorities.
- Refrain from throwing waste materials:There is no problem in having fun on festivals, be it Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Dussehra or any other festival. There is no restriction in enjoying yourself, but we must take care of our environment and society at the same time. After enjoying our party, we must clean the mess around us. No point throwing the waste on roads and streets.
- Avoid firecrackers to sustain air quality:Firecrackers cause environmental pollution. It has several harmful effects. Last year, the air quality in New Delhi was the worst and the safe standards were breached by over 14 times at certain places in the Capital.Even though the effects werevisible from naked eyes for 1 week, but we still care less about anything.
- Use green lights: Lighting up homes on Diwali is a part and parcel of Diwali celebrations. However, one can use electronic lights that run on green energy to make this Diwali eco-friendly. Just imagine how much pollution we can avoid.
- Use public transport: We always witness huge traffic jams at the time of any festival. In congested cities these traffic jams are very common. We must try to use public transport as much as possible to minimize the impact of traffic jams.
- Avoid overboard celebrations: Overboard celebrations often result in injuries, deaths and loss of valuable assets. People have been injured in the past while bursting fire crackers or while burningthe statue of Rawan on Dussehra. There have been instances of several buildings catching fire and people losing their property and lives during these festivals. These things are easily avoidable with proper care.
- Spend less: If our goal is to follow the teaching of our lord and scriptures, then we must refrain from spending too much on festivals. Instead we can help the needy people. God will be more pleased if we help our brothers rather than wasting our money on useless things.
